The Way to Shenzhen(SZX) and Guangzhou(CAN)Today’s topic is the ground transportation guide from Hong Kong city to Shenzhen airport and Guangzhou airport.
How should we escape from Hong Kong when Hong Kong international airport is closed?
The answer is very simple “Go to China mainland with high speed rail”. Shenzhen and Guangzhou are known as neighbor big cities to Hong Kong. Both cities have big airports and a lot of flights, so you can find a way to other cities in China or a way to leave China.
It might be a little late for travelers suffering from closure of Hong Kong international airport in August, but anyway it would be very helpful guide for all travelers moving from Hong Kong to the nearest big airport in China mainland, Shenzhen(SZX) and Guangzhou(CAN) with high speed rail.
Here is the simple diagram to show the ways from Hong Kong West Kowloon station to Shenzhen airport and Guangzhou airport using the express rail and the metro in each city.
I don’t think it needs to explain any more. However, I will add some explanations.
The fare shown on the diagram is for the lowest class. The fare varies by the class you take. Also the time is actual ride time, so it may vary depending on local issues and conditions.
Whether you go to Shenzhen or Guangzhou, you must go to Hong Kong West Kowloon station, which is new station opened in September in 2018. The station is connected to the Airport Express Kowloon station and Metro Kowloon station.
When you go to Shenzhen airport, you have to get off the train at Futian station. Note that not every train stops Futian station, so please be careful when you choose the train. After you arrived at Futian station, you have to transfer to Shenzhen metro line 11 which is distinguished by purple color. The metro takes you to the airport in 30 to 40 minutes.
When you go to Guangzhou airport, you have to get off the train at Guangzhou South station. It is the final destination for most of the train, but is NOT for some trains. Also the stations each train stops are not the same. Fastest train takes you the Guangzhou South in 47 minutes but most of the trains take longer. You should check the time table before you take.
Then you have to transfer to Guangzhou metro line 2. The duration from Guangzhou South to Guangzhou airport is a little long and note that you have to change the train once on your way to the airport. At Jiahewanggang station, you have to get on line 3 train going to the airport.
How to Purchase TicketI strongly recommend you to buy the ticket in advance through the web so that you can choose the best train carefully before you take. Trip.com is my favorite site often used when I travel in China with high speed rail.
In addition to air and accommodation, booking for rail way is available on this site. It provides not only time table but also availability for each class of the train you want to take. You can pay by credit card and then you should print your itinerary sheet out. You will be able to get ticket when you show your itinerary sheet and your passport at the ticket counter of the station. I think it is easier process than directly purchasing the ticket at the station with negotiation.
Shenzhen or Guangzhou? Both Shenzhen airport and Guangzhou airport are quite big airport, but regarding international flights, Guangzhou airport has much more flights than Shenzhen airport. So if you want to find direct flight out of China, you would be better to choose Guangzhou airport. But if you want to leave China from other airport, for example Shanghai or Beijing, both airports are convenient for you. There are a lot of domestic flights.
Have a Safe Trip!I think it is more difficult to travel in China region for people who are not familiar with Chinese characters. So, It is my pleasure that the information in this site is helpful for you. I hope you can make a safe trip inside China and safe trip home!
